Dr. Zaret added a bassbar to a violin for Steve, who tunes this violin an octave lower than standard. Steve's comments:

Peter, after 1 hour it sounds GREAT. I take it tonight to my normal gig and see how it works with an amp. I always use a cello bow with my viola and it seems to work better on the G then the violin bow for obvious reasons. Your solution works just fine.
I think you got me this time. I have a new sound to offer which is always an advantage in a combo, I'm hopeful the others will like it as much as I. Your base bar enables this violin to handle these vibrations!
I'll call you tomorrow, nice job.
Dr. Zaret retrofitted Steve's 17# viola with a bassbar. Steve's response:

Hi Peter,
I've had it a week and put 4-5 hours on it. It certainly has a bigger C, G, D and maybe the A also, I can't tell if the A has changed. I can feel the larger vibrations coming through the body as well as the volume, especially C, it is terrific for my playing which is jazz combos with loud instruments and now I don't need as much mic/amp boost.
I now have my very own "Strad", and I'm going to take it to NY soon and play a scale for the idiot who said it was "Chinese Crap". Its better then his stuff at 10K and up.
Best Regards from a happy camper.
